"One of my students went to see your Nappy Journeys show three times!  She was also impressed by the fun way you handled a serious topic..."

                            K. Spicer

Ayinde has performed his hilarious and honest piece for appreciative and packed audiences at the 2009 National Black Theatre Festival, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, as well as many other venues in the Southeast.  He’s organizing his first national tour and wants to come to YOU!

From sculptured hairdos to intricate waves, braids, plaits and cornrows, "black hair" has always been fertile ground for cultural commentary and even socio-political identity. Nappy Journeys focuses on the artistic expression and amazing phenomenon of African-American hair.

“Everyone in this gigantic sphere experiences their own unique ‘nappy journey’ throughout life,” said Hurrey. “We all have them. Simply put, it’s all about the hair!”

Hurrey received a bachelor’s degree in theater from North Carolina Central University and then pursued his graduate training at the University of Florida, where he received his master’s degree in acting. In 1997, Hurrey wrote, directed and performed a show called Nappy Roots of a Schoolboy as a requirement for his University of Florida degree. Nappy Journeys is a revised version of that production. “Since the first production,” Hurrey said, “my ‘nappy journey’ has continued to evolve into a wild ride of characters and situations that have, in some way, helped to shape the performer you see today.”

Hurrey is an accomplished regional actor, and he has also directed and produced West African dance concerts, West African percussion compositions as well as stage plays. As an educator, Hurrey has trained elementary and university level students in the various aspects of theater. He has conducted performance workshops for youth and young adults in various communities, as well as workshops in movement.

Hurrey continues to spread his theatrical energy to audiences through the efforts of Hurrey-Up Stage & FilmWorks. As producer and founder, Hurrey develops theatrical works for both stage and film with particular focus on cultural awareness and diversity.

"He is a natural comedian (Hurrey), eliciting loud laughter.  Hurrey uses the humor to slip in serious messages about how his hair has helped shape his identity..."
